*TENNESSEE HISTORICAL COMMISSION APPROVES HISTORICAL MARKER HONORING
"FOUNTAIN CITY SCHOOLS" (1 E 116)*
At its meeting on October 17, 2008, the Tennessee Historical
Commission voted to approve an historical marker honoring the history of
the thirteen-acre campus on Gresham Road, originally the site of
Holbrook-Tennessee College (1893-1904), Central High School (1906-1971)
and Fountain City Grammar School (1917-1931). In 1971 when Central High
was relocated to Jacksboro Pike, the campus was designated Gresham
Junior High in honor of Hassie K. Gresham, Central High principal from
1919-1947. In 1979 it was renamed Gresham Middle School.
Rep. Bill Dunn, State Representative for the 16th House District,
provided a formal endorsement in the application for recognition of the
campus as a noteworthy historical site.
The marker will be installed on the Gresham Middle School campus
followed by a dedicatory ceremony in the spring of 2009.
/The mission of the Tennessee Historical Commission is to encourage

all properties which meet National Register criteria, and to implement
other programs of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 as

achievement and accomplishes a very important goal in the "A Step in
Time" campaign to restore & preserve the campus of Fountain City's
historic center of education for future generations," said R. Larry
Smith, Knox County Commissioner and President of the Central High School
Alumni Association.
