Showcasing Student Achievement!

Click to see video highlights from our recent math night - March Math Madness!

For Black History Month, several public service announcement style videos were created through a collaboration of students and teachers. Social Studies teachers Wanda Mash and Chad Turner, several eighth grade students, and tech coordinator David Dixon combined forces to research, script, present, video, and edit these brief movies. Posted on David Dixon's blog in podcast format, they may be downloaded and viewed in iTunes, on a video-capable iPod, or with QuickTime. See the videos here!

Recently in Ms. Compton's Reading Class students had options for choosing a special project at the conclusion of reading the work "The Watsons Go To Birmingham" by Christopher Paul Curtis. Four groups of students chose to use digital cameras and Comic Life software to create a comic book page depicting a scene from the book. The links below show the four comics as .pdfs that you may view in Acrobat Reader.

Byron Watson and His Flamethrower of Death, comic by Zach and Corey

The Great Carp Escape, comic by Ryan and Peyton

Lipless Wonder, comic by Eli and Justin

Every Chihuahua Lines Up to Take a Bite of By, comic by Chris and Jesus

Congratulations to Michaela M. and Taylor D. for awards in this fall's Fontinalis Poetry Contest. Michaela placed second in grades 7-9 and Taylor received honorable mention in grades 4-6.

In spring 2008, we had several teachers who began incorporating student technology projects into their classes. Some of these documented classroom work, and some were more cross-curricular and incorporated reasearch and a strong technology component. We want to publish to the world these examples of how technology integration can serve to engage students and bring a more contemporary approach to learning. Unless noted otherwise, these are videos in podcast format that may be played with the QuickTime plugin or with iTunes. Unless noted, the videos are almost totally filmed and edited by students. (broadband access is needed for these)

Until we transition to the new website format, use this link to visit a full page of links to these videos.

2008 Student Art Show - In May 2008 the Gresham Art Department held its 2nd annual student art show, a huge show, with many impressive works. This video serves as a virtual visit to the exhibit, and even includes interviews with a few of the winners conducted by GMS art teachers Lauren Adams and Glen Price.

Flat Stanley - This long-term Team 6A project involved reading, science, and social studies. Overseen by reading and science teacher Jenny Alvey, students sent Flat Stanleys and questionaires all over the world, with some tremendous responses. The video explains it all! The video was almost totally student filmed and edited.

The Newbery Project - Sixth grade reading teacher Kathryn LaMance had her students read and do research on Newbery Award winning books and authors. The students used email to contact the authors asking permission to use photos from their websites, and the final product was an iPhoto book saved as a .pdf. Click here or on the graphic at right to download a large, 80+ page .pdf combining all the projects (even a few that were not totally finished).
